Currency in India: Indian rupee (INR)

The Indian rupee is available in denominations of Rs. 2, Rs. 5, Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000. There are coins for Rs. 1, Rs. 2 and Rs. 5.

Banks are located throughout the city and ATMs are conveniently located throughout the city's main business and shopping centres. Banking hours usually are 10 AM to 2 PM. Monday to Friday and 10 AM to 12-noon on Saturdays.

Major international credit cards are widely accepted in Pune.

Not all banks accept travelers' Cheque or currency other than dollars or pound sterling. Change money only at accredited bureau. Money changing facility is available at the Lohegaon Airport, a short distance from the city and at the bigger hotels. International foreign exchange providers have several branches in Pune.

Points to remember:
  • Avoid keeping large amounts of money on person or tucked away in your room.
  • Do not loan money to strangers.
  • When paying fees for any reason, always remember to collect the receipt and keep a copy of the same for your records.
  • Open a bank account - find out how, from the International Office at Symbiosis Society or during the orientation programme conducted by your institute.
