Programs in Health and Spirituality with an Indian Perspective

This Wellness program, specially compiled by Symbiosis for would-be medical professionals and remedial therapists, is a reservoir of learning gleaned from the rich ancient Indian texts. It presents the student with a complete overview of Indian concepts of fitness, energy, meditation, medication, therapies and spiritual values. These time-tested principles are as globally relevant in today's times as they were centuries ago.

About Symbiosis Department of Health Sciences (SDHS)

SDHS has conceptualized & implemented a group of professional up-gradation programs, meant to equip the healthcare professional with the appropriate tools in order to survive this age of fierce competition and specialization. SDHS encourages a Symbiosis of thought, word & action of all such professionals who would address the all-important issue of health in its totality. Through its unique, innovative, career oriented programs, SDHS plans to raise a cadre of professionals who would ensure the delivery of optimum health care services.

 
 Course Structure:

Ancient Indian Concepts of Physical & Mental Fitness:

Module Content:
  • Surya Namaskar
  • Traditional Indian sports such as Malkhamb, Kho-kho, kabaddi
  • Sandhya
  • Mantra Chanting, etc.
Module Duration: 4 hours (1 day)


Introductory Anatomy and Physiology:
  • An Introductory Anatomy and Physiology module specifically designed for Remedial Therapists.
  • This module assumes no prior knowledge and may also be taken as a pre-requisite for the program.
  • The module introduces basics of skin, joints, nerves and circulation, as deemed relevant to the Remedial Therapist.
  • The systems will be presented in the following order: The cell, tissues, integument, musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine and reproductive.
Module Duration: 24 hours (3 hours x 8 days)


Principles of Ayurveda:

Module Content:
  • History of Ayurveda
  • Aims of Ayurveda
  • Basic Concepts of Tridosha Theory, Dhatu, Mala
  • Concept of Agni
  • Concept of Prakriti
  • Concept of Food Digestion
  • Terminology: Anatomical Studies with Ayurvedic Perspective
Module Duration: 40 hours


Yoga & Meditation:
  • Yoga is best known as a set of physical practices that include gentle stretches, breathing practices, and progressive deep relaxation.
  • These physical practices are intended to ready the body and mind for meditation as well as for a meditative perspective on life.
  • These meditative practices also follow a sequence. First developed is the capacity to withdraw the senses from focus on the outer world, then, the capacity to concentrate on a meditative subject a candle flame, a sacred or uplifting word or image, or the movement of the breath.
  • Finally, and for most of us only occasionally, the concentration leads into a wordless and timeless experience of inner peace. The yoga masters describe various subtleties among these states of inner peace, but most of us, at best, achieve moments of this experience from time to time.
Module Duration: 10 hours (over 2 weeks)


Massage Therapy:
  • Bodywork or physically treating the structure and functions of the body has been popular since recorded history began. The 'laying on of hands' is fundamental to healing and health.
  • Over the centuries, many schools of thought have emerged offering hundreds of different approaches. This module is ideal for those that want a basic appreciation of massage, and is a pre-requisite for those intending to study bodywork techniques of Sports and Specialized Massage.
Module Content:
  • Introduction: History & Importance of Massage Therapy
  • Seasonal Variations & their effects on the body
  • Principles of Massage therapy: direction, pressure, speed, style etc.
  • Different types of Massage : w.r.t. Age, Prakriti, Organ, Disease
  • Procedures: Chavitti, Pizhichi, Kizhi, Dhara etc.
  • Introduction to Swedish Massage & Esalen Massage
Module Duration: 30 hours (over 2 weeks)


Integrated Approach to Health (Energy Dynamics):
  • Concept of the trio of Mind-Body-Soul
  • Need for harmony amongst them all
  • Stress and its effects on the body functions
  • De-stressing techniques such as Naturopathy, Yoga, Pranayam and Mind Control.

Pranic Healing:
  • Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning, "life-force", the invisible bio-energy or vital energy that keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health. The Japanese call this subtle energy "Ki", the Chinese "Chi", while the Greeks refer to it as "Pneuma." In Polynesian it is known as "Mana" and in Hebrew, "Ruah" meaning "Breath of Life" as in the Old Testament.
  • Vital energy is found in several forms: earth prana, air prana, solar prana and divine prana. As an art and science, Pranic Healing was widely practiced in the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt and India.
  • In Pranic Healing, healing is accomplished by removing negative or disease energy from the patient's energy body and transferring fresh prana to the affected areas.
  • Pranic Healing is based on the principle that body has the ability to heal itself. It utilizes life force as fuel to initiate the necessary biochemical changes to make this happen. Using a scientific "no-touch" methodology, Pranic Healing can prevent and heal a whole spectrum of physical, emotional and mental ailments.
  • Pranic Healing was reintroduced in its present form by Master Choa Kok Sui.

Reiki:
  • Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word, representing universal life energy, the energy which is all around us. It is derived from rei, meaning "free passage" or "transcendental spirit" and ki, meaning "vital life force energy" or " universal life energy".
  • Reiki involves the transfer of energy from practitioner to patient to enhance the body's natural ability to heal itself through the balancing of energy.
  • Reiki utilizes specific techniques for restoring and balancing the natural life force energy within the body. It is a holistic, natural, hands-on energy healing system that touches on all levels: body, mind, and spirit.
Module Duration: 2 days


Principles of Naturopathy:
  • Brief overview about the Natural way of life.
  • Diseases treated (High/ Low BP, Diabetes, Arthritis, Spondylosis, Digestive disorders etc.
  • Introduction to the various modes of treatment like: mud packs, steam bath, enema, chromo bath, paraffin wax bath, Under water pressure therapy.
Module Duration: 16 to 20 hours


Bach Flower Remedies:
  • Bach Flowers provide a thorough system of treatment which can be directed to the emotional side of human illness.
  • The remedies are pure, natural substances, generally of herbal origin and prescribed in minute doses.
  • The Bach Remedies have been referred to as the "essence of recovery" and with accurate prescribing, these medicines bring about dramatic improvement, not only in humans of all ages, but also in animals.
Module Duration: 12 to 15 hours (over 2 days)


Biochemic remedies:
  • The word "biochemistry" comes from the Greek "bios" for "life", coupled with "chemistry", the science that studies the composition of elements and the changes they go through.
  • In the therapeutic sphere, biochemistry is the system of treatment that uses the tissue remedies (inorganic salts of the body tissues) as medicine.
Module Duration: 1 day


Neuro Linguistic Programming:
  • It is a study of human excellence. A study of subjective reality, that is, how we record experiences in life and create our future.
  • NLP helps us to understand how to record, to alter and modify the process of recording experience. It therefore becomes a tool of model success. Behavioral patterns that lead to success and can be transferred from one person to another are discussed here.
Module Duration: 24 hours (3 hours x 8 days)


Acupressure:
  • Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain.
  • The human body has fourteen "meridians" that carry energy throughout the body.
  • These meridians start at the fingertips, connect to the brain, and then connect to the organ associated with the specific meridian.
  • Acupressure deals with all the aspects of a person as a whole: body, emotions, mind and spirit as one, not as separate parts.
  • It relaxes muscular tension and balances the vital life forces of the body.
Module Duration: 2 days


Laughter Therapy:
  • Laughing is found to lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, increase muscle flexion, and boost immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-nterferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies.
  • Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.
  • Laughter is infectious. Hospitals around the country are incorporating formal and informal laughter therapy programs into their therapeutic regimens.
  • In countries such as India, laughing clubs, in which participants gather in the early morning for the sole purpose of laughing, are becoming as popular as Rotary Clubs in the United States.
Module Duration: 1 hour introductory lecture & demonstration


Music therapy:
  • Music therapy is the prescribed use of music and musical interventions in order to restore, maintain, and improve emotional, physical, physiological, and spiritual health and well-being. Within this definition are the key elements which define interventions as music therapy.
  • Music therapy works towards specific therapeutic goals and objectives.
  • Non-musical goals include improving communication skills, decreasing inappropriate behavior, improving academic and motor skills, increasing attention span, strengthening social and leisure skills, pain management and stress reduction. Music therapy can also help individuals on their journey of self-growth and understanding.
Module Duration: 2 hours

  • Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, Magneto Therapy, Auto urine Therapy, Gems & Crystals, Hypnotherapy, Chiropractice.
