Programs in Humanities & Social Sciences

The "India: A Global Heritage" program, compiled by Symbiosis, is an enriching experience that showcases the fascinating world of India's rich diversity and cultural heritage. It presents the avid student with a cornucopia of Indian thought, philosophy, art, literature and economic ethos.

Duration of Module:

A semester would normally be for 6 months 2 lectures/day, 5 days a week, 10 lectures per week, so 60-80 lectures in 6-8 weeks.

Week 1: Historical Perspective of India

1) Ancient India
2) Medieval India
3) Modern India

Week 2: Social Framework of India

1) Gender studies
2) Tribal study

Week 3: Political System & Political Philosophy of India

1) Kautilya's Arthashastras
2) Ancient Political Thought
3) Medieval Political Thought
4) Philosophy of Modern and Recent Political Thought
5) Gandhian Movement
6) Philosophy & Features of the Indian Constitution
7) Panchayat Raj

Week 4: Indian Economic Environment

1) Economic History of India
2) The Co-operative Movement (Visit to Anand NDDB Amul, 3 nights & 2 Days)
3) Policy Framework & Planning
4) Indian Agriculture
5) Indian Industry
6) Social Science / Indian Economy & Culture
7) Indian Corporate Restructuring
8) Indian Labor & the changing role of Trade Unions
9) India's trade and trade related problems
10) India & International Institutions & Organizations - IMF, WORLD BANK, WTO, etc.
11) Functioning of Financial Markets
12) Positioning of India in the Global context

Week 5: Indian Literature, Film & Art, Folk Art, Music & Dance

Week 6: Submission of assignments:

Discussions & interactive sessions Module feedback Preparation time for assignments, Library work The Modules encompass the following:

1. Lectures

3. Case Analysis
4. Visits
5. Assignments
6. Handouts

The following visits can include a mix of:

1) Village Visit
2) Industrial Visit
3) Visit to a cottage & handicraft industry
4) Visit to world heritage monuments
5) Visit to cultural & architectural sites
6) Visit to village development projects
7) Visit to civic sites

Detailed module description, objectives & learning outcome are available on the website. Tailor-made SIP can also be framed according to the requirements of the University or Visiting College.

Assessments: Will be ascertained as per University requirement.
